Jewell, proprietor of Whyte's Hotel, Foxton, and immediately upon the sad news becoming known the flag at the hotel was hoisted to half mast. Here is a caution to lawn tennis players :— Mr H. S. Fitzherbert, M.H.R., met with an awkward accident on Saturday last. Mr Fitzherbert was playing at lawn tonnis when by seme means he twisted his ankle, which was nastily sprained. He will have to keep his room for some days. Currency has been given to a report that Mr Wardell, the Wellington R.M., will retire from active duties at an early date, on a pension. The Wellington Evening Press says it is worthy of note that up to 2.45 o'clock on Monday afternoon it had not received a single line of news with regard to the Taiaroa disaster from the Press Association. We regret to hear that his Honor the Chief Justice is at present confined to his bed by severe attacks of neuralgia and rheumatism. Two men named James ShoebriHge and Alfred Olliver, while digging a drain at the back of an unoccupied house at Pipitea point, Wellington, a few days ago, unearthed the skeleton of a full-sized human being. The men informed Detective Chrystal, who went with them and examined the remains, which were burricd about two and a half feet beneath the surface. Tho adjacent ground is composed of sand and shingle, and it is possible that the skeleton is that of some person who may have been drowned m the early days, or tho body may have liecn properly buried. Judging by the decomposed state of the bones it seems probable that the skeleton was m the ground about 40 years. The Coroner was communicated with, aud ordered the bones to be conveyed to the cemetery and properly interred." It is not considered necessary to hold an inquest. — Wellington paper. The Post has the following :— The Justices of the Peace m the Manawatu district have exercised their duty of revising the jury list m a very practical but decidedly novel direction by striking all their own names off the list of those liable to jury service. We need hardly say that the Commission of tho Peaco does not carry with it any such exemption or privilege. The attention of the Minister of Justice should be directed to this utterly (illegal emasculation of the jury list. At the Auckland Supreme Court on Sunday, m the case of the five Maoris charged with libelling Mr Fraser, Native interpreter, m a telegram sent to the Chairman of Committees, iv the House of Representatives, thn Judge held the telegram partook of the nature of a petition to Parliament, aud was priviledged. After hearing the expression of opinion the prosecution did not offer evidence, and the jury, by direction of the Judge, found a verdict of Not Guilty.
