THE ISLAND OF RAPA.
With regard to the island of Rapa, which has formed so prominent a featnre m connection with the recently negotiations between England and France with respect to the New Hebrides Islands, the following particulars will be of interest : — Rapa (or as it was originally termed) Opar©, is a small island situated about 2000 miles from the nearest mainland m the Pacific Ocean, m lat. 2738 south, and long. 147*17 west. It is 18 miU>3 m circumference, and is of a wild, mountainous character. Tho highest peak reaches 2127 feet from the sea level. Formerly it was used as a coaling and calling stations by vessels vo} r aging be tween Panama and Australia. It is from four to five miles long, and about the same breadth. About 250 natives, of a Malay type, inhabit it ; and the nearest land of any sort is an uninhabited reef about 200 miles away.
