Progress of the Colony.
As an appendix to the statistics of New Zealand for the year 1884, we have been furnished with a series of coloured^ diagrams showing the progress of the colony by increase of population, trade, livestock, cultivation, occupied ht'liings, depoHits m batiks, revenue, railways, telegraph Hues, and shipping, inwards and outwards. The diagram alsoclassifies the ages of the people, theirnpictces of birth, religious denominations, education and industries, as at the census of April, 1881. The -whole are , compiled from records m the Registrar General's office, and form a most iutnresting and instructive) compendium of quite-an<iyvl character. The. mass of information on the above subjects contained m the appendix is inar*ullouß, and is set forth m such an intelligible manner, that the particular statistics required can be ascertained at a glance. The arrangomenf is I'Oth ingenious and easily understood, and reflects credit on its compiler. As a handy reference for a newspaper office, private or public library, or for individual information, the appendix would be simply invaluable.
