The catalogue for Messrs Nolan, Tonks and Co.'s next sale at Manaia sale yards will be found elsewhere. It is expected the number of entries will be largely increased before the date of sale. We are requested to state that on account' of the Jane Douglas not leaving Foxton this week, the time-table will be suspended. The Tui will leave as follows :— 23rd, Tuesday, 10 p.m. ; 25fch, Thursday, 11 p.m. ; 27th, Saturday, midnight. The Dairy Company's milk cart now used as a pedlar's conveyance was all but smashed up on Saturday last. The horse m the trap bolted from near the Commercial and made for the fence enclosing the Square, opposite the Standard office. The animal found some dif ficulty, however, m getting on the footpath and having succeeded ran alongside the fence for some distance on the the two -off wheels, only the wh»jls on the near side coming m contact with the fence prevented the vehicle overturning just as the horse was stopped by the ownerMr Collinson had a narrow escape from a serious accident on Saturday last when driving his express down Mainstreet. By some means the driver manaped to slip down while the trap was m motion between the shafts of the vehicle, and was dragged m this position for a little distance before the, horse was stopped. No injuries, however, of any consequence resulted. Mr Albert Barm will hold his fortnightly stock sale, as usual, at the Campbelltown sale yards, Wanganui, on Wednesday next, the 24th inst. The stock; list is published m full m our advertising columns. . • : . Messrs Barns and Hogan's catalogue for their wool produce sale on next Saturday will be found elsewhere. Messrs JSolan, Tonks and Co. will nold a stock sale at Opunake to-morrow, and at Manaia on Thursday. The low price of sheep m the South Canterbury district says the Timaru Hernia, is causing much uneasiness At the recent monthly sale at Makikihi hardly any purchaseri turned up, and large numbers of sheep could not be sold at any price. A private telegram from a run, to the north of Waimate County says that a squatter there is prepared to give away 4000 head to anyone who will come and take them. Farmers m Temuka district are selling mutton at 2d per lb all round. The Chinaman who was arrested on a charge of maliciously wounding Joseph Wright, of Tahoraite, refused to take nourishment of any description for a long time. He said " you shootee me ; no hangee. Ino eatee — I die if you no shootee me." . Two men convicted of playing illegal games at. the Napier races were dealt with by the Court there. The Bench did not consider a fine would meet the case, as defendants could pay a fineout'of money they had defrauded the public of. Defendants wire each sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor, the table and appurtenances to be destroyed.. Hitherto fie shooting season m the Manawatu district has commenced m April, and sportsmen there with licenses were not very particular m crossing the border land m pursuit of game. In two ways that is to be put, a stop to m the future ; our season will commence at the. same date as theirs, and Mr Campbell, of Woodville, has agreed to act as ranger, so as to prevent the depredations of sportsmen from that district. — Napier paper. A local paper says there is great activity m the building trad* m Wellington, and a large number of cottages, handsome dwelling houses, and shops are going np m all directions.-. As a consequence all connected with the building trade are tully employed. The Timaru Herald says that apples and peaches sail for little or nothing m the Orari, Temuka, and (ieraldine dis- | tricts this season. In Geraldine, pigs are being fed on apples. They will not fetch a halfpenny a pound. Busineai mast be very brisk m the Rotorua district. The proprietor of the Hot Lakes Chronicle announces that I publication will be suspended for a month while he takes a rest and a holiday. The Kaikoura Star strongly recommends a new tailor, who has just started bußiuesa, on the ground that he is "a strictly temperate man, and a member of the Rechabita Order."
