Mr Gv F. Hawkins, solicitor, had an f exciting personal experience, of a holt j yesterday afternoon. He was out driv- I ing, when his horse, a ri&an, took' it -into its head to start. The pace was fast, and the road none too smooth, but Mr Hawkins' bravely st.ucU to the reins. He j naturally thought the headlong career of the runaway would moderate, wheu. ap--proaching the owner's residence. But no, on he went, going within a few feet of a deep gravel pit, and turned sharp round th« corner, nnd down tho aiext sireit, which is. very rough, -with .iudifferejit formation m places, roots sticking up and small boulders for metal, .'he conveyance jumped about pretfy merrily when doing this piece of roa. at about 20iniIes,an hour, but the strong determined hold on the reins brought the runaway to his senses andlo a standstill, without any damage being done to .horse, harness, or conveyance.
