The Costliness of Government.
Commenting on the costliness of governing this colony the Otago JDaily Times makes the followiyg observations: — "If we want good work we must pay and treat well all civil servants who' are assential to the colony, but must sternly refuse to b« saddled iwitli further charges that are not needed. Parliament ahbuld check Ministers, ' and refuse to allow. them to spend large sums embellishing Ministerial' residences, .or to run up such [arge personal travelling expenses and hotel bills as are shown by; a recently published Parliamentary return. At a time when the coloriy \r groaniug uuder its grevious burden of taxation" it! is monstrous that Ministers should spend lavishly m adbrniag their residences, m travelling after the costly fashion of Oriental princes, or iudulging m yachting trips m the Hinemoa. We earnest^ fru'gtthaj; next session there will ue no money voted tor such needless extravagances. If, however, further expenditure or this character be incurred it will be for the electors to do their duty, and to replace Ministers and' members by others who .will understand tbe needs of the/cplony, and will resolutely refuse to sanction waste of public money,, whether charged, fa consolidated revenue or to new loans. 1 ! •
