A special meeting will also be held to consider proposed amendment to by-law 5. • It is nnderstood that Messrs Ollivier 'and Brown, solicitors for Sir William Fox, have engaged the Attorney- General to conduct the dafenee m the action wbich is to be brought' by MY B. S. Downes M of Pier Hotel, ?for alleged i libel, the damages claimed being £6000:- ''t Messrs^ Buckley, Stafford and Barton are the plaintiff's solicitors. The Manawatu Railway Company's line will, it is expected, be open for traffic on or before the first of June inext from Palmerston North to Otaki while the portion from Wellington to PaikaVariki for passengers and mails :wil be opened, m a fortnight. The gap between these two sections will not, it is expected, be ready for traffic 'till December next, as there are two tunnels of tweh'ty- ! eix chains to be cut on this portion of the line. We have heard that the company will probably make tho connection from Woodville to Palmerston on the same terms as those under winch- they are now constructing the.
