A considerable number of ladies and gentlemen met m the Weslcyan II nil last evening, to consider the best mode of taking, united action m the interest of Temperance. Mr Wingate was voted to the chair and opened the meeting with a Temporsuicehyinn and prayer ; after which, m a few well chosen words he stated the object of the meeting and called upon Christians and all who love their fellowmen to come forward t«> the work and leave uo stono unturned m theii endeavours to abate the evils of intemperance ; he then called upon Mr Grace to address, the meeting. Before commencing his address Mr Grac proposed and the Rev. R. S.Uunn seconded that Mr A. Clarke be appointed secretary and act at preseut meeting ; this being carried unanimously Mr Grace proceeded to state that as. the result of past experience he was of the opinion that the meeting could not do better than form itself into a Blue Ribbon Union ; such a society would have its meetings open to the public, and stand a better chance of being recruited ou that account ; it would be managed by a committee, periodical entertainments would be given, and if entered into with willing hearts and hands there was promise of a gi and organization; he thought it should be entirely undenominational, that every oue might meet on common ground. ; Mr Whitehead rose to say that Mr Grace's utterances were an expression of his own thoughts, but he would urge others more able than himself to lay their ideas before the meeting. No further comment being forthcoming, Mr Grace, to- bring matters to an issue, proposed that the meeting resolve itself into a Blue Ribbon Temperance Union. This was seconded by Mr Whitehead and earned unanimously. The chairman invited discussion on the question ot making it denominational but received no response. " The Rev. R. S. Bunn rose to say that now the matter was settled, he thought they might have done better m making the Society denominational ; them was a certain Mr Burnett, m connection with the Wesleyan body, who was engaged m travelling through the colonies, holding Temperance meetings, lecturing and preaching sermons, whose assistance .might have been had at a small expense. However, as it was, Mr Glover had promised to do his utmost to visit Palmerston again, and the Society would have togettogether a choir and arrangefor the lectures : she: was glad the-; Society was to be unsectarian and would do his best to assist. Kibblewhite, Grace, 0. Cojhs, Gardiner, W. Stubbs, J. Stubbs, Whitehead, Mrs H. Kibblewhite, Mrs Mclvenna, and Miss McKejma. It was Vesbl ved that the committee hold office for- a term of six uJoHths.. It w^sdecided that the amount of subscription from members be fixed by the committee. The Rev. B. Bunn, proposed ..that the date of first, public meeting be left for the comiuitteo to appoint, and that Ashnrst and Bunnythorpe friends, be invited to attend. This was agreed to and with a little more discussion on matters of detail, followed by the usual yote of thanks the meeting closed as it had opened, with a hymn* and a prayer.
