Manawatu Road Board.

Pr ;sont — "Wardens Snelson (chair), Mathieson,'Sly, Edwards, Pratt, and Akers. Minutes of last meetings held read and confirmed. The Chairman informed tho meeting that the Chairman of the Waste Lands Board had visited the district since their last meeting,and had taken the Engineer with him to examine that portion ot their district where certain Government monies had heen expended by the Board and which expenditure had been stated to the departrueut to be improperly and illegally carried out. Some persons had befca good enough to communicate with the Government on the matter and make false reprcsentafous ; but the Chairman of tho Board was quite satisfied with what he saw and considered that the Board had done everything required of them. The Chairman farther informed the Wardens that the Waste Lands Board had since sent up £3,50 kept hack on account of the allegations made, and that this fact alone spoke for the satisfaction which the Department had shewn with their dealings. . . Re Fitzherbert Rdafl a further reply was sent requesting Government to re.consider the matter as affecting a nutnber of ratepayers m the district. Mr Lmton'Sr resignation as returning officer was received. Warden Sly objected to certain remark's m the said letter to the effect viz. that there were : members ol! the Board who would be pleased to hear of his re, signing. He for bn'o was not at all pleased, and he would -not like it to go abroad that he was. He would endorse Warden Edwards' proposition that a vote of thanks be passed to Mr Linton for the efficiency of his services rendered. -It was resolved that the Chairman should sign the . Kiwitea Road Board petition re railway charges. A discussion took place over the letter from the WeUinston-Manawatu Railway Com Dan3 r re application for rates. It was unaniraotis,ly resolved to again apply for payment, failing which other proceedings would be taken. Re Mr Hanson's application for expenditure on sec. 1563 Kairanga. Warden Sly proposed that the money coming from the Waste Lands Board be expended thereon. Seconded by Warden Pratt. Warden Mathieson proposed an amendment—That the applicant be requested to allow the money to be used ,on the other side of the road leading to Karere. The proposition was carried. The Secretary was instructed to. write to the Government, asking, whether if -a settler wished it the money m cases of 1 this kind could be diverted. - Re Mr Manson's letter referring to gravel reserve. } ; '> ' ■ Resolved to reply to the effect that the Board does not understand what the writer means. Re Messrs, Mullins and Gremnn's request to have deposit relunded,the Board decided that same should be granted. Mr Wingates application for slaughter license was granted on the motion of Warden Sly, fee to be proportionate as reqnested. Re Messrs Stubbs' application. It was resolved to instruct the person offending to remove fence at. onse. The resignation of the ranger,, Maule, was received. Messrs Buick and Matheson reported m connection wild the complaint made against the Engineer as to the metalling of the Longburn Road that they found the same to be needless, as the whole of the metalling was on examination found" to be of a uniform depth and properly distributed.Mr Chamberlain, County Dosr Tax Collector, complained to the Board that he found certain dogs belonging to the county district had been registered by ; the Borough collector . and the fees appropriated. He mentioned as cases m point, four dogs belonging to Messrs Smith and Walsh, and two to Mr Beale. Also that these persons finding they had paid the wrong collector and that the county tax was the smallest demanded the difference from him. Discussion took place as to tho power of the Board to interfere m: the matter, and the question of how the Act applied when a dog was':kept at work m the \ country during the day and brought into town m the evening. Ultimately it was resolved to refer the : matter to the, Borough Council, • .
