Suicide at Sea.

(UNITKD PBESS ASSOCIATION.) • New Plymouth, Thursday. -- , The following.are,. additional particuT lars respecting the suicide on board the Hawea yesterday morning : — Kaye was allowed the run of the vessel bn^the wav dpwn, and was very quiet, and passed his time, on -Tuesday night, until a late hbur, m reading. Yesterd ay morning hfe went to the -bathroom at "about halfpasr G, and as he stayed rather a long time, one of his attendants tried to open the door, which,-' however, was found locked. Mr Binstead, the chief steward, happened to pass at this ' time, and 5n told what had occurred, he lowered /himself over the side of the vessel, and peered m through|the porthole.,,,. There -was, no sign of » Kaj'e, ;but his clothes could be seen lying m ihe .bath. Mr Binstead, at bnce acquainted the, captain withjthe state of affairs,, and the latter,, thinking Kaye . might be hiding under the bath, gave orders that the door was to- be burst open. , However, pne of tjie ship's boy^ was lowered down to the pprth hole, and got through and opened the, dpdri There was no, longer "any d.oubt as to Stye's jfate. . The port . hole is. ? 13 inches diameter, . quite large "enough , for an ordinary man to get through. Kaye was about 26 years of age, and. , was of medium build, and a little- above; the medium height. The spot .where the suicide was committed was about 15 miles from New Plymouth.. There were half a-dozen -people or so on. the deck, but they did hot notice anything to lead them to believe that such a -tragedy had been enacted. An official inquiry into the circumstances connected with the suicide was held at 11 a.m. to-day l\y Mr Thompson, Collector of Customs. The inquiry elicited nothing new and all the cirou instances point to the conclusion that no one is to blame. .
