LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Wellington Woollen Factory is expected to commence active operations m June next. Some butter consigned by the Waikato Cheese Factory to Queensland, has netted 12* d. A humane society of a novel sort is soon to be organised m a Connecticut town. Its object will be the care of the remains of persons supposed to be dead, until burial alive is shown to be an impossibility. The season for shooting - deer m the Nelson district is fixed by the Govornor to be between February 20 and March 20. The trout fishing 6eason m the same district has been extended to March 31. Competent authorities have estimated that there are over 5.000,000 acres of land m England which might be planted to advantage with trees. Dirty streets, unclean water, neglected sewers, and anti- vaccination ideas are said to be the cause of the visitation of smallpox m Montreal. Nine million acres of land m Germany are devoted to the cultivation of the potato. The product last year am* mounted to 23,000,000 tons. At Keneh, Egypt, tho commission for the suppression of brigandage has condemned three brigands to death, seventeen to hard labor for life, seventeen to imprisonment for fifteen years, twenty to ten years, two to eight years, two to five years, four to three years, one to six months, and one— a woman — to three months. To-day m Wanganui, leases of Small Grazing Runs, m the Wanganui,'Tuhua, Muriraotu, and Rangitikei Districts, comprising about 84,000 acres,' will be submitted to public auction at the Masonic Hall. i !Mr Gr. H. Aldrich is about to open a butcher's shop at Bunnythorpe. ' He wjil apply for a slaughter license at tho next meeting of the Manchester Road Board . An Auckland paper is authorised to announce that it is His Excellancy's intention to make Auckland his headquarters from about the third week of March until about the middle of May. From a letter m the Otago Daily Times, signed by the promoter of the 'Art Union" Consultation, it would appear that the Colonial Secretary has not withdrawn his permission, and the affair is filling rapidly. It is said that a gentleman who had largely invested m the Melbourne tramway shares— -which havo risen from 10s to 30s 6d— sold out, and betted £14,000 profits on the transaction. A local clergyman prayed on last Sabbath that the reins of Government would fall from the unrighteous hands of Sir Julius and his colleagues. — Feilding Star. Going to Law, — In a recent theatrical law suite m England, tho defence of one of the parties, Mr Con over, was that the defendants were ejected because they had broken an agreement to pay the rent m advance. On this point Mr Ward m his evidence said that, when the rent was tendered, ■ Mrs Conover slammed the door m his face and told him to go to -Upon this the following edifying passage occurred ;—Counsil: " Did you go ?" Witness : " No." (Laughter), Mr Justice Day : "He went to law instead." (More laughter. J Mr Kemp : " Much the same thing, my lud." (Court thrown into convulsions.) A young Salvationist was prosecuted .at Masterton on Friday for creating: a disturbance at the Barracks and assaulting Captain Bates. The evidence showed that defendant had irritated the Captain by making faces at him during the service, and when the plate went round he told the lady collector that instead of asking him for money she ought to give him his sixpence for creating some fun and putting some life into the service. The Captain ordered him out, and when he declined laid hold of his arm, whereupon h« swung the captain into the lobby over a perambulator and down the steps. The fallen and ejected oaptain was raised by his wife and comrades. The police were called, and the disturber apologised, and was apparently forgiven, but on the question being put to the soldiers a majority decided to prosecute. A fine of ten shillings was imposed. The terriblo earnestness of the Auckland Licensed Vituallers Committee m connection with the forthcoming election is borne testimony to by the following fact (says tho Star). On Monday it was found that the nomination paper of Mr P. Comiskey was informal, as it did not bear his signature, and worst of all Mr Comisky had gone to the Thames The nomiuatioa paper had to be lodged at noon next day. The committee at once chartered tha s.s. Rose Casey, and an hour after the discovery she was steaming to the Thames with several members of the Committee on board. Mr Comiskey's signature was obtained, and the- steamer reached Auckland at 6 o'clock next morning. A fawyer was browbeating a witness during a divorce trial and trying to rule rjis evidence on jthe ground that he was a SpirijtuaJisJ,, an# forajn^crac'ked- 4 « Aro you a Spiritualist, sir •?" he asked. '? J am, sir." " When did you last have a talk with a spirit?' "Last night." "Whose spirit was it?" "Julius C»sar.'' "And what did he say to you ?" "He asked me if I was a lawyer." "Oh, he did ; and what did you say to that?" "I said 'No, God forbid.'" The lawyer had no more questione to ask. The Taieri f Otago) Advocate, a few days ago, appropriately celebrated the Introduction of steam into its printing office, S.evera} of the Councillors and other gentlemen were pregent. and the first paper printed by steam was put through th« machine by His Worship the Mayor. As the first paper was taken off the cylinder three hearty cheers were given for the Taieri Advocate and three more for the Mayor. A few congratulatory speeches were made, and some toasts duly honoured and a pleasant hour spent, m which some reminiscence of the early days of Mosglel were retailed,
