Notes on Palmerston.

. BY A TOURIST. [KeildiiuSfctr.] The following extract from a li-ttpr written (<y a gentleman who wus a visitor to this part of the colony a short time ago, will probably prove interesting to our readers; " I was greatly pleased WttH trie journey trom Pahnerston via Woddville to Maaterton. The Manawatn Gorge alone is an inducement to go that way. It possoßses a beauty of its own which sets it apart altogether from Porter's Pass and the Otira Gorge, for which these do not prepare you There is some fine country m the vicinity of Woodvillo ;-the energy displayed there and m the neighbourhood astonished me. There is a like enthusiasm m building houses, and kuocking down trees, which must briug beneficial results m a short time. I can now see very clearly the important position Palmerston will occupy when the railway through the Gorge, and the Wellington-Manawatn line are completed, establishing through communication from Napier to Welling ton. There are nearly fifty nrileßyel to be undertaken between Woodville and the terminus near Mastertou, an I tradv will have taken the other route long before that is open, besides the road almost throughout will be a good gradient, with no Rimntaka to climb, therefore the journey will bo quicker than via Masterton. If my surmise is correct Palmerston will be the moßt important railway centre m the whota colony. I was much struck with the excellence ol the hotelsin Pahncrston 1 stayed for a few hours at the Commercial, where I noticed the Reading Room was furnished belter than most private drawing rooms, and tlie literary pabulum m the news papers magazines and books was on a more liberal Hcale than any public reading room I have seen m the colony. Your paper was quite right when it christened Palmerstdn the Chicago of the South, and when I next visit the Porkopolis m the States I will tell you how far the comparison still holds good.
