BUTTER EXPORT.

Thk following extract from the Wan-' ganui Chronicle will be of interest to a large number of our country reader* :— We greatly regret to learn that the Auckland Butter Company have found it heccessary to stop operations m this district,' Mr T. D. Cumruins having > received a communication from .the managers yes-> terday instructing hiui tp cease purchasing, at any rate for the present. Two, > reasons have conduced to this regrettableresult. In the first place, the price 'has receded seriously m Sydney, the market' upon which the Auckland company largely depend for their export ; and m the second place the supply has lately largely exceeded the demand, \vith the lesult that the company's cool v chamber is how full. How much the" sus^ensioft of operations means to vthjs district will be understood when we say that the purchases made by Mr. .Cummina, the coin : pany's local agent, have' averaged from £800 to £1000 a month; The' price paid by the company m its latest pui.chasee in-. ' Wariganui has been B^d per pound, and how impossible it is for tnis rate to-be i continued will ba evident when we mention that butter is now selling m Sydney at 8d per pound. Such a urice, we are assured, would hot allow of mpre than s^d being paid here, taking into consideration the freight, difference m tare, and allowance for shrinkage. What strikes a casual, observer as a curious fact m connection with the prices we have quoted, is, that while the settlers are quite ready to supply butter m wholesale "quantities" at B^l per pound, the retail price m town is Is 3d. The disparity seems ridiculous. Howevever, as the avenue for export is now closed — we hope only temporarily — it ia possible that a more reasonable adjustment of local prices will m the meantime take place.
