PERIODICAL REMOVAL OF SCHOOL INSPECTORS.

The "Wairarapa Star makes the following remarks on a question which of late lias been prominently before the public : — The result oL : Inspectors being fixed luminaries is not simply disastroutto the hopes of young, clever and aspiring teachers. It has its influence on schools, and we think it imposes draw backs on education. Each lnspecto... has his o\vn methods and crotchets, ah these are studied by the teacher, and enforced on the pupil. Children, we believe, are nob prepared 'for their examinations with a due regard for general instruction m their standards. Tlie teacher knows the "weak points ", m the.lnspuetor, generally better than the Inspecj tor understands the ; •' weak points "m the teacher. The natural consequence is that the teacher, if he possesses ordinary shrewdness, will specially orairi the immature juvenile mind so as to meet the specific demands of the. inspector. Hence a certain amount of cunning and shrewdness on the part of the teacher is more importance than competency, and this remark applies to the pupil as well.* Results are consequently very often misleading, for the pupil who passes m one of the higher standards is not necessarily well educated. This evil might, we consider, be remedied, and a vast improvement m our present system of education would be effected, if the inspector- general waV something more than ideal, and inspectors, like Wesleyan clergymen had to travel round' the circuit.
