DANGER OF FIRE TO WOODEN BRIDGES.
I Constable Harnett has informed the Wellington Press that two or three days ago the Llntt Bridge again caiight fire m an even more serious way than on the former occasion, some two feet of plankinr being considerably burnt before the fire was put out. Having m mind the valuable nature of this bridge, and the danger it is exposed to from lire m the dry weather when bush fires are prevalent around, we certainly think the Government should arrange for an adequate artesian supply m its immediate vicinity, and furnish the police station, which is close to it, with a requisite length of hose, m order to ensure its safety. A cheaper plan, and even more efficacious, perhaps, would be to coat the bridee with the new fire- proof asbestos paint. This would serve two purposes, and be sufficient protection against chance sparks. These remarks apply with equal force to the Fitzherbert Bridge.
