Cable Charges.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.} | . Wellington, Monday. Dr Lemon this afternoon received a cablegram from the Eastern Extension Cable Company, stating that the company refused to agree to the terms decided upon by the New Zealand Parliament, and that the company would hold out against any reduction m the cable charges. Later. With reference to the refusal ot the Eastern Extension Cable Company to accept the Government proposals re the cable subsidy, Sir Julius Yogel wires from Waiwera as follows :— " Tne Cable Company have sent a cablegram to the effect that they will raise the tariff unless we give the subsidy for 10 years, and then will insist on a minimum of ten words and a Press guarantee, or they will take the subsidy for five, years, without the proposed reduction of the present charges. I have refused to entertain the proposition, and have cabled to the Agent-Gene-ral to ascortain the . cost of making and laying a new cable from . the principal makers. The cost to the colony, would; > I believe, be leas.
