The Stratford Fire.
( UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) New Plymouth, Tuesday. The 1 ush fires have been subdued, and all daiif. er may now be said to be over. A telegram oame into New Plymouth last night stating that the tire had broken out "at Elthatn, and the volunteers from New Pluiuouth again went out m the special twin, but the fire was not serious and was nt once put out. The special engine came m at four o'clock this morning. The special reporter of the Taranaki Herald states that all was apparentlj safe. A meeting of the Centtal Reliaf Committee was held at noon to-day, the Mayor of New Plymouth presiding. It was resolved that telegrams should be sent to the Mayors m other pans of the 1 colony heartily thanking the people for their sympathy and offers of md, stating that the fires were now sinking, and, so tar ascertained, the amount locally sub scribed is sufficient, but should further need arise the committee will gladly avail itself of the proffer of further aid*. I The following is a ' list, of telegrams sent aad : will explain themsolves. The Mayor of Wanganui. i Relief Committee heartily thank the people of Wauganui for sympathy and offers of aid. Fira now subsiding, and as for as ascertained amount already subscribed is sufficient. For your information a telegram 8(»nt to the Mayor of New Plymouth is as follow* :—" Committee amazed at resolution passed Ity your committee and published m to-night's Star, and eousider it is childish to say that 4J500 you hare collected is, sufficient. v,May we ask for an explanation of. the unwarrantable and insulting interference with our canvass."
