The Stratford Fire.

(UNITED PREBB ASSOCIATION/) New Plymouth, Saturda}\ The wind having subsided, the bush fires at Stratford are getting subdued. The Volunteers from New Plymouth are still stationed m watch parties along the line of road between Stratford and Ingle wsod, to be ready m case of the fire again bursting out. Tho accounts of the loss of stock are great, many cattle having been burnt to death, aud the screams of 25 pigs m a stye, which were burnt alive, were dreadf ul.h Te women aud children of the burnt-out settlers are m town, and are being well looked after. The subscription list is over £400, and amounts are still coming m. Messrs Nathan and Co., of Auckland, have sent £5, the Union Shipping Company £10 10s, and Mr Barlejinan | of Blenheim, £5 5. - Special messages to the Daily .News, received from Stratford are as follows: — " Have been to Te Roto. There are no fires of any consequence there. The fires at Eltham are dying out, and (here is no damage from there to Stratford. The party of volunteers will stay at Inglewood aud work from there. There is no danger if the wind does not rise." A party of Voluuteers left New Plymouth for Stratford at 3 p.m. to day, accompanied by Inspector Pardy, to relieve those now at work. Rain was falling at Stratford and Inglewood this morning, and helped to extinguish tho fire. The wind has died away, and it is expected that all the Volunteers will return by train to-night, there being little danger apprehended. The public here are highly gratified at. tho sympathy shown for the settlers at Auckland, Wellington, Wauganui, aud other places The relief fund here has reached over £500, and it is expected that with the assistance from outside, the struggling bush settlers will be able to return to their land, and. commence work agaiu. Wellington, Saturday. Subscriptions m aid of the sufferers by the bush fires at Stratford have beeu opened at the various newspaper officeß, and at the Evening Post Office £75 was collected to-day. Smaller have been collected at the Press and Times offioes. '
