The Russian soldier m the field is a man of many virtues. At home m peace, indeed, he has but one vice to speak of. He will get drunk when he can, and keepdrunk as long as he can. H« its docile by nature, and he obeys bis officer, whom, indeed, he addresses as '• little father, 1 ' as if he ' were a child. ■■ He is contented m hardship, heat takes no effect on him,' and he has become .well inured to cold. His weakest point m campaigning is his susceptibility to homesickness, of which malady thousands of soldiers actually died while the Russian army was lying before Constantinople, waiting for the ratification of the treaty of Berlin. . ■ The late rains m New Soutk Wales have shut the Sydney market for a time, to the- large supplies of New Zealand butter hitherto shipped to that colony. The 'stoppage of this source of profit to . our dairy farmers will be severely felt while it lasts, but it will not be for loug af the average weather of New South Wales is too dry to allow the butter and ; cheese supplies of that colony to be produced within its own boundaries. — Herald. There were a number of gorse and grass fires on the outskirts of the town yesterday, and bush fires m the distance filled the air with smoke. People should be very careful when smoking or using matches m this weather. — Chronicle, Messrs Richards and Cummins were highly complimented m a letter received from Mr John Melody and Co., of Sydney, on the quality and size respectively of a shipment of bacon and hams reoeutly forwarded from Wauganui, The bacon, realized 9J and the haina lid per lb, being topped only by the English imported, which fetched a penny per pound m advance. It is a little bit curious that while, our local curers can manage to top the market m such cities as Sydney, many Wanganui people should still have a hankering after the imported article. — Chronicle.
