To-day a deputation waited upon the Minister of Justiae to ask that the town uigh't be granted the use of prison labor, vt the present time prisoners sentenced o 14 days and over are sent to Dunedin, nd the Corporation asked the Minister; ■ allow. these prisoners to be kept m the,' pwn and enaploved' m breaking metal ! ror the streets. The Minister said to do co would increase the cost of supervision, but he would make inquiries and let the deputation know. Today was the hottest day experienced m Oamaru for years. The crops are beginning to droop, and the grass is being burnt up. Christchurch, Thursday. At a meeting of the Hospital Board to-day, Dr Weston was appointed ai house surgeon to the Christchurch Hospital. The Union Insurance Loinpany have declared their usual interim dividend of 10 per cent. The residence of J. T. Biccarton had a narrow escape from destruction by fira this afternoon. A plantation of firs near the house caught fire from a burning gorse fence, and 16 chains of the plantation were destroyed. The fire was got under. At 3 a.m. to-day a fire occurred near Lancester Park, whereby a shop and dtaellinghouse, owned and occupied by Henry Edge, and a cottage belonging to Mrs Stewart, were destroyed. Edge's premises are insured m the New Zealand offic* for £180, and the stock and furniture m the Equitable for £250, and Stewart's house m the Colonial for £200. The fire becan m Edge's kitchen, and is supposed to have been accidental. ! Dunedin, Thursday. At the annual meeting; of Keait and McCarthy (Limited), the report showed a balance to debit of profit and loss account of £11,800. At an extraordinary meeting afterward it was resolved to 'call up the remainder of the capital. The Union Company have tendered thanks to the officers and crew of the Wairarapa tor their exertions m extinguishing the tire on board that vessel. One hundml men were engaged to proceed to Melbourne tor ' the * Union Steamship Co; as Jumpers m connection with the strike .fliere, the rate of wages being 45s per week. The men leave tomorrow. The office was quite besieged by Applicants; * f - : ; ' ' INVERCARQILL, Thursday. The Invercargill Steamship Company have resolved to wind up and dissolve. The; Company was. formed to purchase a vessel m England for the trade between here and Dunedin ; but while things were negotiating another Company got a sfeatrier m Dunedin for the trade, which will; not support two vessels. !■•■•- Complaints are made that the continued'dry weather : is effecting the crops. New Plymouth, Thursday. A six roomed house on the York-road, near Midhurst, was burnt yesterday. It was owned by Mr Worms, and caught fire when the, family were out milking. The fire commenced near the chimney. The building was inscirad for £200 and %he furniture for 4100. Nothing was saved, • Masterton, Thursday. Mr G. Beethain, M.H.R., addressed a large meeting of his constituents at ; the Theatre last night. He was well received, and accorded a vote of thanks. ' .Auckland, Thursday. The Hinemo'a, after landing Sir Julius and Lady Yogel at Waiwera, came on to Auckland, arriving 'this morning. She took on board some • torpedo gear 1 , and left for Wellington m the forenoon. Mr B. F, Ovei bury of the firm of Williams and Overbury, wool brokers, London, arrived from Australia to make a tour m the Colony m connection with the wool trade. Richard Dean, settler, of Waiuku, who fell from his horse the other day, died yesterday from concussion of the brain. Ah inquest is to be held to-day.
