Accident to tbe Taupo Coach.

The following are fuller particulars m connection with the accident to the Taupe coach, which was capsized oa Monday m the Mohaka cutting through which Mr Griffiths lost his life :— Whil* descending the incline, which is a very Bte<-p one, the break gave way, and Mr Griffiths had to trust to his skill and coolness while going down the incline. On reaching the bottom, and going round the sharp corner to the bridge.the coach capsiz.-d, and fell down the bank overlooking the river. Mr Griffith! sustained a very bad compound fractura of the left leg below the knee, beside* several bruises and cuts, liias Denholnk one of the passengers, had several of her teeth knocked out, besides receivinga good shaking. The other two passengers escaped with a good shaking. All three were conveyed to Tarawcra m a> buggy. Dr Uoore arrived from Napier at about- 3 o'clock m the morning, and at once attended to Mr Griffiths and had him driven to the Napier Hospital m a* buggy, where he arrived last night afe 6 o'clock. Ou arriving there it was* found that the leg was so badly smashed that any effort to save the limb would! be fruitless, and preparations were mad* for amputation, and Drs Keywortb. Allen and Moore were m attendance to perform the operatiou, but after consultation it was decided to wait till after the patient rallied, before proceeding to amputate the injured limb. This morning the operation was successfully performed by Dr Koy worth, assisted by Drs De Lisl-, Allea, and Moor*. Tho muscles of tlie lower leg were so much lacerated and destroyed by Ihe accideut, that ther« was no chance of saving tha leg. The amputation was performed through the knee-joint, and the patient bore the operation fairly well, much better than was expected.
