The Parnellite press are urging a conference of landlords with a view of effecting a compromise with their tenants regarding the payment of rent. Petitions containing over 350,000 signatures have been prepared praying for the release of Mr Stead. Twenty guineas per cent, has been charged for underwriting the ship Tosshead, bound from Australia to San Francisco, now overdue. Mr J. Douglas, 0.M.G., has been appointed Interim Hieh Commissioner of New Guinea. Parleying, which has been proceeding between the AgentsGeneral and the Colonial Office regarding the appointment, as wall as to mat ters respecting Fiji, has been suspended till after the holidays.
