TF KOOTFS VISIT TO THE EAST COAST.
The Natire Minister this morning received the following telegram from Te Kooti :—" Petane, 24th December, 1885. Hon. J. Balance, Wellington. — I hay* arrived at Petane. I and my people arebeing treated kindly br the European* and Maoris. On the 26th we shall proceed to Wairoa. When we arrive at Mohaka, I will let you know. That itall from Te Turuki Te Kooti." W« (Post) understand that, io far ai Tr Kooti and his people are concerned,, there is no fear of any breach of thepeace. The Native Minister has informed. Te Kooti that the law must be observed,, and the latter ha 9 given him an aisarance of his peaceable intentions and hi* desire to show hiß loyalty to the Government, He states that he is simply making a friendly visit, and is prepared to uphold the Queen's flag. The Government are m no way interfering with Te Kooti's movements. They recognise) m him a free subject, who has a right to | go from place to place unfettered, so long as he commits no breach of that peace, or shows no intention to do io. The polioy of the Government m the matter is simply to uphold the law, and insist upon Te Kooti doing the same. Instructions have' been given to the Inspector of police at Napier to take ell possible precautions to preserve order ; but beyond this nothing will be don* unless the necessity for farther aetiott arises.
