The above club held its annual Summer Meeting on Boxing Day, and is to be congratulated on the complete sue- ] cess attending the day's sport. The • largest perhaps of any gathering which has assembled on the Palmerston racecourse was that of Saturday last, and and the day passed without anything happening to mar the enjoymeut of the sport. The weather, although threatening m the morning, kept fine all day with the exception of a very few drops of rain which fell shortly after noon. Quite a large number of ladies were present, most of whom occupied seats m the Grand Stand, others preferring to remain on their vehicles, a number of the lattwr being scattered about the ground opposite the stand. The first race was not got off till about 11.30. The following events were got through. 1. Handicap HuKDrjK RiDB, 80 sots. To start at 11 a.m. Nomination, 1 sor. ; acceptance, 1 sot. Dtsunao, s miles, over 8 flights of hurdles, 3ft Gin high. Mr Bromley's eh g Bambler 1 Mr Cameron's br g Patent Safety ... 2 Mr Murphy's eh m Lady Lee ... 3 Hughes' Totara, Turoa's Porotawa, and Casey's Lady Bab, also, ran. Simpson's b m Anarora being scratched. This race was not * very exciting one, and was won easily by Rambler. Lady Lee fell at the hurdle near the stand, throwing her rider, who, however, mounted again and succeeded m coming m a good third. Totara pulled up lame at the third hardle and was rode off the course. Patent Safety led all the way twice round but was passed by Rambler before coming m the straight, the latter keeping to the front for the remainder of the race. Porotawa and Lady Bab baulked at the second jump from home. Time 4min 11 and twofifth sec. Totalisator £219, dividend £4. 2. HACK Huitn u ß Rack, 10 sots. To start at 11.46 a.r». Post entry, 1 »ov. Lumsden's br g Comet. The start was effected fairly well, all the horses getting away m a buueh. Halfway round the course Neawa came to grief, throwing his rider C ran wall, who was dragged for about a chain and ultimately got free by the stirrup-leather coming away. A number of the horses ran round the hurdles m this race, which was won easily by Slaughterman with Lady Florence a a good second. Totalisator £163, dividend £2 14s. 1. Mai dkn Platk, 25 soys. To start at 12.50 p.m. Entrance, 1 sot. Wcigh^for age. Open to all horses that hare nerer won an advertised race prior to dntt of entry, after which the winner of any such race to carry a penalty of 51b. Distance, 1.1 miles. Mr Palmer's b g Gallant 1 Mr Cameron's br g Patent Safety ... 2 Mr Bonea' br g Leader ... ... 3 The following horses also started — Mr J. Mather's eh m Ivy Leaf, Mr J. B. Huutley's eh g Kangaroo. Mr C. Smith's eh g Joker, Mr J. Fenton's b g Painter, Mr T. Cribb's b g Touch and-Go. The horses cot away well together, and when parsing the stand Joker lod ahead, the rest following close to gether. Getting around the turn by the river Kangaroo fell, unseating his rider. At the back of the course Leader made a strong effort but was unable to gain a lead. Gallant than came to the front and kept the lead all the way, winning easily, hard held. Leader ran m second but ran round a post m the straight. Time, 2min 54 and two-fifth sees. Totalisator £311, dividend -fc'3 12s 4. NOVKL HACK BAOK, SO eors. To start at 1.15 p.m. Post entry, 1 sot. Weights not less than 9st. For all horses that hare nerer won public money (hack races excepted.) Humphries eh m Rose, Mr C. Anderson's eh na Annie, and Mr B. Hanson's b g Fenian. Larrikin got away from the others from the start and kept the lead all way round, winning easily, Kangaroo second. Totalisator, £86 ; dividend, £1 12s. The winner was immediately sold by auction for £25 10s, Mr J. Nathan being the purchaser. Mr Snelson wielded the hammer on behalf of the Club. 5 . THH FAIiBBBSTOtr GUIXHAS, a Handicap of 100 guineas ; second horse to rsceire 10 sots, from stakos. To .start at 2.30 p.m. Nominations, \ sot; acceptance, 2 sots. Distance If miles. ThU race being the biggest of the day caused a, good deal of excitement among the more enthusiastic turfites on the stand, the demonstrative display exceeding anything we have previously noticed at a meeting of this CJub. The race, however, was a splendid one from beginning to finish. Laurel led off at the turn of the river, followed by Germaine and Bayard, Entering the back of th» course Bayard come to the front. Trickster then took the lead, Germaine next, followed by Laurel holding back. Passing the gates the same order was maintained, Wilberforce holding back. Entering the straight Trickster kept the lead. Passing the stand Germaine came forward followed by Trickster, Gallant next, and Laurel close up, Bayard' and Wilberforce laboring behind. Entering the back of the course Germaine and Trickster led well away from the ruck, Bayard leading the second three. Passing the gates Laurel and Bayard closed up, • Germaine still leadinc. Entering the straight Laurel ran through her horses and eanght Germaine ; both jockeys sat down and rode hard when a splendid race ensued, both coming home neok and neok, Germaine winning by hardljf a nose, Laurel second, Bayard Wo lengtHs away third. The following horses started : — Joker, Silverstreak, Fad, Sensation, Soft Soat>, and Larrikin. A fair start was made, Sensation leading by the stand and keepin r ahead all round, Soft Soap following close at the back of the oourse. Larrikin on entering the straight ran hard and gained on Sensation and a good race ensued, the latter coming to the winning poet one length ahead. A protest was entered against Sensation by Mr Nathan, owner of Larrikin, on the ground that

the former had rtm previously for advertised races. It was decided that the Secretary of the Chritcchurch Jockey Club should be written to, and if it is proved that the mare is not as represented the money to be paid over to the owner of Larrikin. The totalizator paid out on Sensation. Total, J&268 ; dividend, £1 18s. 7. FLYING HANDICAP, 50 sots ; second liorse to rect-ive 10 sots, from stakes. To start at 4 p.m. Nomimition, X hot. ; acceptance, 1 aor. Distance, 6 furlongs. The winner of the Palmerstot Guineas to carry 71bs. penalty. ' Mr S. Powell's eh m Lady Florence 1 Mr F. W. Harrison's Hagar... .;. 2 Mr D. Scott's Parvenu 3 The following horses were scratched m this race :— Laurel, Bayard, Miss Puritan, and Pointer (killed). Lady Florence got well away at the start and kept the lead all the way round, followed by Hagar and Parvenu. The same order was maintained coming home, Lady Florence winning by about four lengths. Time, lmin. 20sec. Totalisator, £382 ; dividend, £4 4s. A Handicap Hack Race was got upat the close. The following horses were nominated : — Eceleston, Journal, Marksman, Lazy, Kakapo, and ; Cora. The< latter four accepted. Marksman led from the start and won hard held. Totalisator, £110 ; dividend, £3 10s. On the whole a most enjoyable day's* sport was carried through without any disturbance or serious mishap occaring,. and the Club are to be congratulated on the success attained. The Committeeand Stewards worked well together and kept things moving smoothly during the day. The booths were held by Messrs Biddell and Clifford and did good business. Mr J. D. Fraser's refreshment ■tall was also well patronised, and wu highly spoken off as being the best arranged booth of the kind ever on the course. The legal games promoted by Mr Jones were also well patronised all the day. The musin was supplied by a band imported from Marton, and was well rendered, giving every satiiikc* tion.
