The Dead Hand Mystery.
MRS HOWARD ARRESTED,
MOKE SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, Tuesday. * This morning Mrs Howard was arrested for conspiring to defraud the Government Insurance Association, Mutual Life Association, and the Accident Assurauce Company, m connection with the severed hand mystery. She and the two Godfreys were brought up at the R.M. Court and remanded for eight days, no evidence being taken. Two jewellers, to whom the riug on the severed hand found at Stunner have been submitted -for examination, have pronounced that the engraving of the letters A. H. is recent work, not more than a fortnight old. They are also of opinion that the letters hare been cut by some person not a regular engraver, and that a knife or some sharp instiument different from a graver's tool has been used. It is stated that another person, whose name has not transpired, is suspected of being prime mover m the conspiracy.
