Some human remains were found on Mount Victoria while digging trenches for the battery. A party of unemployed commence on the Bastion Rock battery on Monday. Two of the applicants were passengers by the Alameda. Ahhburton, Monday. Shearman, a well-known publican, has been found dead m a well attached to his premises. Dokedin, Monday. The bootmakers' strike is now at an end, era amicable settlement having 1 been arrived at between the man and masters. The Premier addresies his constituents on Wednesday, reviewing Major Atkinson's recant speech. The -Hon. Mr 'Pole visited and inspected the gaol on Saturday, and the don. Mr Buckley the hospital. The Colonial Secretary inspects Seacliffe Asylum on Monday. Large bush fires were burning north of the city last night, but a change of wind prevented damage to other property. Part of the city, to day, was enveloped m smoke. Greymouth, Monday. A twelve hours go-as-you-please match for £25 a- side between G. J. Haylett and James McGregor concluded. on Saturday night. They did 61 miles 6 laps m Me time m a small hall with 34 laps to the mile. There w^s a good deal of excitement at the finish. Haylett won by only a yard or so. . Chuistchdrch, Monday. Dr NedwiH's stable were destroyed by firo on Saturday night. The horses were saved with difficulty, and several vehicles: were burnt. The property was insured ' m the New Zealand Office for £250. , Invkrcabgill, Monday. A meeting of farmers, convened by Mr . P. Dalr} mple, was held on Saturday for; the purpose of considering, how far it isf m the power of the Legislature to render! assistance to small farmers and pastoral) industries under the present severe depression. About forty persons were pre sent. Mr Dairy-mole submitted a petition to the House of Representatives- in' support of Government loans to farmers, at low rates of interest. Messrs Cowan; and Hatch, M.H.R.'s spoke m support of the petition, but Messrs G. Dawson, J. Hamilton, and J. Allison, representatives of the class bought' to be benefitted,; scouted the idea';of Government aid. 1 A motion adopting the petition was agreed to. : J.-
