Sir John Macdonald, premier of Canada, who is at present on a visft to England, delivered an address at the Guildhall last evening. During his speech be referred to the begining of federation m , Australia, which he considered had commenced under auspicious circumstances, ' and he expressed a hope that all the Colonies there who were at present holding aloof would join, so as to make a complete federation of the Australian Colonies.

London, Dec. 17 It is reported that a French Protectorate has been established over the island of Anvayissa, or Great Comoro, lying m the Mozambique Channel, hctween Africa and Madagascar. The Pall Mall Gazette publishes an article to day m which it states that ihe scheme proposed by Mr Gladstone for th* settlement of the Irish difficulty includes an Irish Parliament, to sit m Dublin and to have (he complete control of all Irish affairs, the Crown retaining its right of veto, which would, however, only be exercised upon the ailvice of the Irish Ministry of the day. The Australian mails, dated Melbourne, November 7, per Messageries' steamer Yarra, were delivered here today via Marseilles.' Dec. 18. To-day's Standard asserts that the Sultan, has appointed Prince Alexander Governor of Ro'umelia for life, the Powers agreeing to the appointment. Constantinople, Dec. 18. The Turkish Commission Has arrived at Nisch, and Prince Alexander has assented to its proposals with certain reservations. Calcutta, Dec. 18. Advices from Burmah state that the Dacoits are very numerous m the vicinity of ..Mandalay, and that they are haras- | sing the British troops.
