Mr F. Brady J.P.. at Pahautanui recently dealt with a case m which two respectable settlers were charred with having committed a breach of the peace m the local hotel. It appeared that the men, who were; not under the influence of liquor,, were m the hotel, whun a difference of opinion arose. Angry words ensued, and at length the disputants adjonrnad to the rear premises and engaged In a fight. There was no denial as to the actnal fighting, but the question whidh the Court was called upon to decide wai whether the affair took place m a public pi act within the meaning of the Act. Ilia worship decided that it had, and mulcted each defendant m a penalty of 10b and COUtB. The Marton paper appears to havt got a bad fright over the rumoured opposition. A verdict of Accidental Death was returned.
