The South Pacific Oil Company have resolved to continue boring several hundred feet. The are now down 930 feet. The Supreme Court sat till 3 o'clock j'esterday morning. John Depean, for attempting to cause abortion on a young girl, was sentenced to five years' penal servitude. This finished the criminal business. Chrkstchuroh, Wednesday. On Saturday the two-year-old child of Edward Collison was killed frby falling into some horsepower gearing at Seafield. Mr Matthew Burnett, temperance lecturer, concluded a month's mission m the South Island with a meeting at Lyttelton on Monday night. During the month 12,000 persons signed the pledge, and 14,000 blue ribbons and 850 family cards were issued. The people m the vicinity noticed a peculiar smell, and informed the police, who burst opan the door, and found Wood's body, which -was greatly decomposed. Its appearance indicated that decease must have occurred some time ago. Auckland, Wednesday. The second ordinary general meeting of shareholder* of the New Zealand Ltnd Mortgage Company was held yesterday. Sir F. Whitaker presided. In the course of his address he said, so far as the Directors could see and were advised, they had reasonable expectation that the shareholders would get for the half-year a dividend at the rate of 8 per cent, per annum. The head office of the Company is m London. On receipt of accounts from London, probably m about three months, another meeting will be called. The retiring Directors, Messrs T. Buddie, J. M. Clark, andHon J. Williamson were re-elected. H.M.S. Nelson is not expected till Tuesday. She is engaged m torpedo practice at Russell. The Auckland Fire Underwriters' Association entertained the Auckland and Parnell Fire Brigades and Salvage Corps to a banquet. Te Kooti visited Kihikihi on Monday vrith a Urge cavalcade. He purchased large supplies. It is stated that he is going with his followers to Poverty Bay, notwithstanding the warning given him.
