. ' Two interesting cases which were to. have been heard at the Wellington Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday have been postponed till 6th January, 1886, viz,,* Ngahuha Tunga -v. WellingtonManawatu Railway Company, and Wi Nera v. same, both claims for damages on account of horses destroyed through negligence on the part of defendant company. In the -'first' Pase~£2o is claimed, -and m the second £15. Professor Black met with . great success during hia lecturing tower m Coromandel. He is expected m Wellington, on the 27th instant. He states, m a telegram Received by the Government to-day, that about £400 has been subscribed at the Thames for &■ School of Mines, and adds that the Thames is a grand mineral country. It was rumored on Wednesday m well- formed circles m Wellington that Mr W . C. Smith, the member for Waipawa, WoulrJ be called to the Upper IHouie; and that an official notification io that affect would probably be published before the end of the year. — Wellington paper.— [We don't believe the rumour foT a moment, nor can we conceive any possible grounds for its circulation! or any claims the member for Wsipawa could prefer to being called to the Upper House. Renard and Krcbs, the reronauts, whose experiment m balloon-steering aroused considerable interest some months ago, have not been idleiiiDce. They made a third and memibgly conclusive trial of tlieir navigable balloon. The car contained three gentlemen, who, with the aid of the screw, were able to steer for a given . land mark, to make head acaingt the wind, and after a number of evolutions m the air, return to descend at the start* ing point. .These experiments were re* peated with equally satisfactory results before the Minister "of War and the chief of the engineers, who congratulated the persevering aaronauts on their success." We (Press) hear that Dr Gilbert has offered to meet Mr I. Salby on a religi4>ue opntroversy and the offer has been accepted, the debate to take place at an early date. - * Once a shepherd, caught npon the hill by night, built a fire under the lee of a pile of stones that he had tossed together. The heat split some of the stones,; and m the morning the man saw within one of the cracks a piece of shining silver ore.
