One of the proofs commonly advanoed for tba theory that the cold m northern regions has increased m historic times is that there is an increase of ice on the eastern shores of Greenland ; another is, that barley, which was successfully grown m Iceland from its first settle, ment m 870 down to the middle of the fifteenth century, is no longer cultivated there. It is, therefore, of miieh interest to learn from the Globus that the Icelandic Government lately attempted to grow barley m the island on a considerable scale, and that the results were very favourable.
