The Native Minister has received information from several chiefs m King Country that they are willing to allow prospecting through that part of tho : country, and instructions have hecn sent j to Mr Wilkinson, the (xovermnunt agent j at Alexandra, to select prospectors who will at once m company with natives proceed to llangitoto, where it is believed gold will be discovered. The Government are about to under- ) take the earthwork m connection with ■ tho defence works on Ivina _ Island, Lyttelton harbor, m readiness for new guns, which are to arrive from England. Mr Ward, an expert m the nse of torpedoes, who was selected at Home for the New Zealand Government by the Agent-General, has arrived m the Colony and reported himself to tlie Defence ■ Minister. Mr Ward, who is a pensioner of the Imperial Army, is said to be a specialist m the nse of the Whitehead and Fish, torpedoes, and as it is tho intention o£ the Government to obtain a number of such torpedoes, Mr Ward's duties will be particularly devoted to those.
