[Hawera Star.] Mr Stitt, of Opunake, is suing T» Whiti for goods supplied. The claim is for £95 8s Bd. The Opunake correspondent of the Taranaki Herald writes : — vOn tha case coming up for bearing, the Resident Magistrate took tha unprecedtnted course of asking the plaintiff whether defendant owed him any further sam, and after some trouble elicited the information that the amount had been reduced m order to bring it into th» R.M. Court. On hearing this the Magistrate adjourned the case m order to discover whether he had power to adjudicate m the matter. It it needless to surmise what would have been the action m case of a European. Is it not m this, a» m all Maori cases, the local authorities, though pretending to be independent, have really their strings pulled from the central authority and dare. not take* at' tion against any individual aborigin<*l till they are told m each ease by the Government that the Maori exists under the same law as the white man, and must , obey it.?"
