A recently appointed J.P. out West m N.S.W., who wrote to a neighbour shortly after the uew list appeared, and m a friendly sort of way told him of the eventful circumstance, wound up by saying — " Shud you ever come before me m ray Jewdishil cupasity, you can depend that I will deal with you as leaniently as possible. A Wellington paper is informed that an order has been given by Government for the immediate stoppage of the works on the Central Prison at Mount Cook. The • railway workshops at Easfcown, Wanganui, are being greatly extended. At the present time there are three large additions being built to the engine sheds and workshops. An unfortunate and extraordinary occurrence is said to have happened a few days ago, while some six hundred head of cattle were being taken from tho j M'lntyre to Pullaming station. They j ate some supposed poisonous weed on tlie road, and the result was that not loss than one hundred and sixty head died within one hour, the loss being estimated at about £1200.— Sydney Globe.
