His sire, the pure imported Clydesdale horse, Fowler's Wallace, bred by Mr Donald McKinley. Wouldkam Hall, near Gloucester, out of a pure Clydesdale mare, bred by Mr .1. N. Fleming, Campbelton, Scotland : her sire, the celebrated horse' Lofty Wallace, gained several first prizes before leaving the Old Country. Maggie was bred by Mr Sutherland, Taieri, Otatro, out of a "Napoleon mare, by Sir William Wallace (imported). Sir Willhin Wallace bred by William Anderson, Esq., Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, out of Brisk, by Garibaldi. As a yearling took first prize at Maybole, Kirkmichael, aud Glasgow, and second at Ayr. As a two-year-old, second at Ayr and Glasgow, and also second at the Highland Society's Show held that year at Edinburgh ; aud when only three days landed m Otago took second prize against horses of all agps at the Taieri, although only 2J years old. Totara, the sire -of Longlands, win tick of the Great Autntnn Handicap, April,^B7B, and 1879 ; also Volunteer, second m the Champagne Stakes, and ran a dead heat with Muta for Queen's Plate m Dunedin, and won the Timaru Maiden Plate, 1£ miles, m 2m. 45y8., and Flying Stakes, | mile, m lm. 17£s., at the Wellington Jockey Club Meeting, 1880 ; also Merlin, winner of the Spring Handicap at Wanganui ; also Totara, wiuiu-r of the Rangitikci Hunt Club Steeplechase, Waverley Handicap Hurdle Race, and Mauawalu Handicap Hurdles at Palmcfston Diomedes himself is the winner of the Wanganui Wtlter Weight- for«age Hurdle Race, beating Reform, New Year, Dhudeen, ParneH, and Christmas ; won the Tiirakina Handicap Hiirdh-s, beating a large field ; and ran a good third for the Wanganui Grand National Steeplechase, carrying 12st 71bs., givitig the winner, Ruahine, Ist stbs., aud the second horse, Dhudoen, 2st 51bs., thereby showing that he is a weight carrier, and has exceptionally good staying power. Diomedes was awarded first prize at the Wanganui A. and P. Association's Show as a sire best calculated to improve the breed of saddle horses. Diomedes is a rich bay with black poiuts, standing 16$ hands high, with immense bone and muscle, good action, is 7 years old, and is considered to be one of the best cross-country horses m New Zealand.
