Christchuroh. Tuesday. At the meeting of the City Conncil last night petitions were received from the employes of several principal firms who are affected by the Employment of Females and Others Act and its amendment, asking that no steps mifcht be taken to alter the half-holiday from Saturday to Thursday. In consequence of this the" Council agreed not to make the proposed change as they are empowered to do under the amended Act. William Harrison, whose house ia William street was discovered to ba on fire under very suspicious circum— srances on November 23, was yesterday committed for trial under a charge of arson. A meeting of the Moorhonse Statue Committee was held yesterday afternoon, at which the Governor attended. It - was decided that the statue, whioh is being erected m the Domain, should be unveiled on December 22n<l.
