The settlers are beginning to apprehend serious consequences from the prolonged absence of rain. The Road Board meets on Wednesday at 10 a.m., and tho Borough Council at 7.30 p.m. We again remind our readers of Messrs Sneison and Co.'s sale of Mrs Dungan's property and furniture to-morrow at 2 p.m. We are glad to hear that the Cheese Factory has disposed of a large quantity of its manufacture to merchants m Wellington and Sydnoy at remunerative j lates. The quality of the cheese is very highly spoken of. An Age telegram from Sydney, is as follows ; — A number of unclaimed parcels left m the carriages of the Great Norther)) Railway were sold by auction to-day. One parcel, which was bought for sh, when opened, was found to contain mining Rtoclc of Victorian and Now South Wales mines, httviug a market value of £5000.
lii directing a jury m au ii quest on a I • t>y found dead m bed l>y iiß parents, J Mr S. Smelt, deputy coroner for Man- j cheater, remarked that ptirouts who allowed children iindur two yi«tn:a ot age to ale- p with tliein shoiild'bh^iinished. \t our tim<* tlieri- was a law inA^ifi'rniiny directing that whenever a mother re porh-d tiuding her bi\by dead m bed with her she should bu imprisoned. The result was a marked diminution' of infant mortality. The rage tor land m Melbourne shows very little abatement. Tli«s Age says that last week was not a very active one, owing to the bad weather and ihe inauguration of the racing carnival, yet sales were recorded by seven auctioneers to the value. of close upon £140,000 — a sum, large as it is, which has been trebled during tha busy season. A contemporary says that Captain Rus sell's stupid notion ia having the effect of bringing on a season of unparalleled depression through tbe stoppage of public works. It there is any connection between the stoppage of public works and this depression, all we can Hay is that that is all tho moro reason why tht'y .should be stopped. If the country can only be kept from ruin by the constant expenditure of borrowed money, then thu sooner the collapse comes the better for the country. We could then start afresh upon sounder principles, and hope by industry and economy to attain to a reasonable pitch of real, not fictitious, prosperity. — Bruce Herald. The average daily supply of milk to the Milton Dairy Factory, Otauo, has reached to over 750 gallons from 45 fanners. We are glad to be m a position to statfl that. Mr v. D. Bickerton has let the contract for building theiheatre. Messrs Rabone and Holder were the successful tenderers, and signed the contract yesterday, iha work is to be completed m four months. The great need for such a building m Woodville has never been more apparent than within the last month or two, and wn believe that ihe theatre will not only bo a public boon but will amply repay Mr Biokerton for bin enterprise. — Woodville Examiner. The proprietor hopes to establish a permanent export business m time and should, we think, with his persevering energy and steady application to work receive the support uectissaiy to a successful continuance of his enterprise. Mr Johnston, manager of the local Clothing Factory branch, informs us he has received a choice consignment of js'«w Zealand manufactured perfumes. The goods aro said to bt for both sweetness and strength equal to the imported article and are considerably lower m price. Au American paper says that there is a good deal of humbug talked and written about the so-called swift passages of oceau steamers across the Atlantic. The quantity of coal consumed on such occasions is enormous, and the time is not reckoned from the actual port of departure, but from Sandy Hook to within sight of Queenstown, instead of from New York to Liverpool. Close upou two days would have to be added if the actual distance was reckoned. Thirty-three years ago the Collins steamer Baltic ran from LirerJ pool to New York m nine days and three hours. Writing of the crops m the northern part of South Australia, the Bruce correspondent of the Kapuna Herald says : — " I am sorry to tell you that our harvest outlook is very srloomy. There will be no reaping on many farms this year, and many who will reap will get very little over seed. These remarks apply to many of our areas. Arkaba, Wonoka, Palmer, Coomatoo, Euralia, Willowe, Booleroo, and Apilla will get four to five bushels. No doubt there are a few exceptions — some favoured spots ; still the general run of the northern areas will return very little over seed and flour. 1 ' The next English and European mail via San Francisco will close at thePuhnerbton Post Office on Friday, December 4th, at 7.45 p.m. A meeting of creditors m the estate of Charles Pope, master mariner, lapsed for want of a quorum.
