Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1885. PERSONAL.

With to-day's issue the Manawatu Standard enters upon another year of its existence. Although the past year or two have not been periods of prosperity for the district a6 a wholo, the Standard has ma>le steady progress notwithstanding. Our aim has been to tjive our readers irood value for their subscriptions, and m this respect our efforts have,' we Hatter ourselves, been attended with success, as judged by our steadily increasing list of subscribers. We have had to contend with systematic persecution and persistent misrepresentation from a certain source ; but the public have now formed a pretty correct estimate with regard to cause and effect m connection with these matters, and the intermittent attacks can, therefore, be allowed to pass. We take tbe opportunity of warmly thanking our numerous friends all over the district for the liberal support accorded us. It was our intention to have published the Standard m an enlarged form to-day, but the paper of the larger size, specially ordered for the purpose, will not be to hand before early next year. We look forward to the near approach of better times, m which we, m common with the general public, will hope to participate. With many, for a considerable time pasti hard times have prevailed ; but there is reason to believe that the succeeding period will be more prosperous, at least there are reassuring indications m that direction. As the district progresses, so wil* we continue to advance, every now and' again forging ahead a further step. As before, we shall continue to pursue the even tenor of our way, paying but little heed to the malevolent designs of the one or two m the community who bear us ill-will. It is as impossible for a newspaper, as for an individual, to avoid making enemies; but we have the satisfaction of knowing that irom time to time persons formerly opposed to us, often for,: trifling causes, forget their hostility and become friendly as before. We are always pleased, to bury animosities, and ready to acknowledge any errors or shortcomings, if convinced that we have been to blame. Our desire is to deal justly with all, and to seek to do our utmost to advanco the best interests of the district. We need not refer m detail to various attempts made during the past year to injure us from a business point of view ; all those attempts, as we at the time predicted they would, have recoiled on tho projectors, and passed us by harmlessly. We have not been without our full share of losses, reverses and disappointments ; but by dint of hard work, perseverance, industiy and steadfastness of purpose, we have been able to achieve nearly everything we undertook to accomplish. We have many plans m store for the future, some of which, no doubt, will fail, and m others we will be successful. Our readers may rest assured of one thing, viz,, that no effort will be wanting on our part to make the Standard as readable a newspaper as can be found m the district. We are extending our field of circulation ateVlidlv year by year, and spare no expense or trouble m the matter of distribution over a wide area, and to remote localities. In conclusion we may say that our motto is, has been, and will be, Up and doing, With a heart for any fate ; Still achieving, still pursuing— Learn to labour and to wait.
