The Mayoralty.
On tee poll being declared last evening the successfnl candidate, Mr Alex. Ferguson, and tho defeated one Mr L.G. West, briefly addressed the ratepayers present. Mr Ferguson heartily thanked -his supporters tor the honor they had conferred upon'hirri v by,electiug him to the position of chief magistrate of the township, and hoped to successfully perform the duties attaching, to his office during the ensuing twelve months. He was not a little surprised at the result.as the opinion expressed during the day was 2to 1 against him. He, however, had not sought the honor conferred, but as he had been elected it would be his aim to endeavour to always act m the interests of the ratepayers and the community at large. Mr West also thanked the ratepayers for the manner m which they had supported him. A few years back he was but a simple tradesman, and he felt prond that he should to-day have been so nearly elected, to- the highest ciric position amongst them. Next year he would again appear before them as a candidate for the office when who knew but success might be attained.
