The Canadian papers declare that it is intended to enablish a mail service with Australia, the mails being carried by the Canadian Pacific Railway to the Pacific Coast, and thence by a line of fast steamers to Australia. The Times, referring to Mr Gladstone's Midlothian speeches, pronounces them to be failures. Mr Gladstone advocates the abolition of the law of mortmain. f x The Kco'i >mis f - considers that England is a favorable Held for the operations of the Australian Mutual Life Insurance and kindred societies. The polling m connection with the general elections begins on Tuesday and concludes on the 9th . December, with the exception of a few Scottish constituencies. In the French Chamber of Deputies a Touquin credit of seventytivc million francs has been proposed. The vessel sustained m >re damage through her mishap than was supposed, and has foundered. The passengers and mails were saved, and are being reshipped on board the s.s. Clyde, which was sent to the assistance of the Indus. Mr Gladstone, addressing a public meeting at Edinburgh, declared that the questien of Church disestablish inent was not to be regarded as a test question at the general elections, fcle very strongly denounced the Tory party for raising it. Nov. 12. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy is suffering from indisposition of a rather severe character. Nov. 13. The Home Office lias been requested to receive a deputation of sympathisers with Mr Stead, headed by Mr Varley, the revivalist, who desired to plead for a remission of the sentence passed upon the former m connection with the Lily Armstrong abduction ca^e. Tjie Home Office has, however, declined to re- . ceive the deputation. m Scotland are indignant at the evasive attitude assumed by Mr Gladstone on, the question of the disestablishment of the Church. Lord Selborne, ex Lord Chancellor, has announced that he will decline to support the Liberal party if they should adopt au attitude hostile to the Church of England. Nov. 15. | It is rumored that Major Rhodes, who was lately engaged by the Victorian Government to take charge of the defences, is to be recalled for Home service.
