The New Guinea Exploring Expedition.
There seems now little, if any, doubt that the eyploring expedition m New Guinea sent out by the New WalfeS Geographical Society has been massacred . The party was naadeup • as follows :— Leader, Captain H. C. Everill ; zoologist, Dr Hcecke, of Adelaide ; zoologist assistant, Mr Foggatt, Melbourne ; surgeon and geologist, Dr, Bernays, Melbourne ; sub-l^dere, Mr^ Goj#rey Hemswprth, Brisbane, >ni jMr B. • 0. .Creagh; Man-, ning River ; general collector, Mr X, Broadbent, Sydney ; botanic collector, Mr W. Bauerlin, Sydney ; photographer, Mr J. 'H. Shaw, , Sydney : artist,. Mr A. J. Vogan, late of Auckland ; and Mr "W. H. Hastings, licensed surveyor, who was to assist-.the leader m astronomical work. Eleven Malays, specially engaged for the expedition, were picked up at Thursday Island. These included, two quartermaster,- »■ carpenter, a ,cook, ,and a maudpr, and as the leader of the party spoke the Malay, language fluently, it was anticipated there would be no - difficulty m dealing with them. The Queensland Government detailed the steamer Advance to convoy the Bonito from Thursday .Island .to the Ami River, where ihe work of the expedition would actually begin. It was intended, however, to obtain interpreters before entering the rive^vj; The expedition/: was' supr plied with a fine surf boat,, fitted as a lifeboat,and sufficiently large to carryjthe whole jptirtj comfortably. The . Bonito , was io be left at the. base of ; operatioM r on the Aird River, m charge of the nautical sub-leader.— Exchange. , ..'-
