(by telegraph.) (united press association.) Sydney, NoVv 18. The Governor departed quietly on Monday,- and Sir Alfred Stepiien was sworn m on the following day a« Deputy-Governor. The report of the murder of the exploring party m New Guinea was brought to Cooktown by two Papuans. The party had a small steam launch and some boats. The Papuans state that they, came down the Fly Kiyer by night> they being the only tyro, who escaped. The party consisted of 13 Europeans and 11 Malays, all well armedi Owing to the insurance companies increasing their premiums for mercantile warehouses, a new raorcantile insurance company is projected. ... • Hudson Bros.' contract is conoluded, and water now flows from* the N«pean into the Botany dams. Very discouraging accounts are received from the country owing to. the want of rain.
