The Railway officials m the Colony are waking 1 - up. to the fact that something must be done m the matter of the strong competition offered by carters to the railway lines m the various districts. The following is a couy of a letter sent 1 by the station-master at Onehunga to a
firm of'merclwnts m Taranaki : — "You have just forwarded by steamer to Onehunga 10 kegs butter, oonsigned to toe care of Mr - t carter, ; Qnehuhga. Had yd\i consigned them to care of Railway Agent, Ouehunga, the charge by rail for carriage to Auckland and delivery to consignee would have been 2s sd, estimating the weight at ssowt, or at the rate of Gs Hd per ton. As I believe the carter's charge fto be much higher than this, Ijt.lij.tik it right to advise you of our rate, that you may make a comparison. ' Should you find|out rate lowest, please m future , consign your shipments to cave of our agent it Onehunga,. and they will receive attention and. prompt dispatch. ;••■■••■ '■'■■■■■
