Soveral applications for mining leases m the Pohangina district cauie before tbo Wellington Waste Lands Board at its ineetiug on Thursday last. In consequence of tho absence of the Commissioner, who is at present m the Wairarapa, the consideration of the applications was deferred for a fortnight. In connecton with this matter Mr M'Cardle ■aid that he thought that the Board should recommend Government to appoint a competent person to report on theprospects of the new field. He explain ed that he would like such a step to be taken, because it was a fact that of late men had been running about the district m which he resided with pieces of broken road metal, Which, it was alleged, eoniained gold, silver, and other metals. On the motion of Mr M'Cardle, seconded i by Mr Beelham, it was resolved to recommend Government to appoint a person to report on the prospects at Pohaugina. — Fost. { A telegram received this morning; from Mr Corby pays that the shareholders m the first claim on the Pdhangina have decided to op«n out the hole on Monday. This is what Anderson should have allowed the prospectors to do m the first instance, and so have saved a great Ideal of dissatisfaction now existing. Mr Corby's employers have given him in' slructionß to wait on the ground and sea the hole opened out. — Last night's Herald. A writer m the Herald contributes the following : — Peculiar place that Pohaugina — one lot of men find gold and swear by the place, another lot find nothing and swear at it. . The results of the Pohangitia " crushing are being: anxiously waited for m Bulls. We know of several persons who ; are ready to make a start there m the ' event of a favourable crushing being obtained. — Advocate. A meeting of the directors of the ; Feildins: Prospecting Association was held last night, Sherwill m the chair. The report of the prospectors was read as follows : — " We proceeded as directed , to Anderson's reef, on a tributary of the Pohangina, and pegged off a lease as per application attached, cepies of which we duly posted on pegs. The claim is the fourth from Auderion'B claim, to the west of Forbes' claim, and to the north of George and Walker's (Woodville \ Company.) There is a small creek running through our claim showing some small leaders, samples of which we have brought down. We have not succeeded m finding any gold, and are ot opinion that there is nothing to warrant the association m registering a claim, . as it would only be throwing mouey away. There have betn over 100 men on the ground during our stay, and they all say that they do not think there has been anything found to pay. We also prospected the main river towards the gorge and with the same results, also the adjacent creeks. The men all left except one party" , and came down jthe river with us to-day. The remainder are awaiting pack horses to bring them out. AH are going home thoroughly disgusted with the place.— (Signed— C. Curtis, R Logan.)" — After some discussion v was ; resolved to pay the prospectors and close i the aft air. The meeting then adjourned. (united press association.) Wellington, Saturday. The Government telegraphed to Mr J. W. March ant, Chief Surveyor of the Wellington District, and who is now m Manawata, asking to him to make an inspection of the Pohangina reefs, add ascertain whether it is worth while to send up a. geologist.
