Ordinary monthly meeting, Tuesday, October 27th. Prewnt— Messrs Watt (chair), Sanaon, Bridge, BaWr, Fryyand Rev. Mr Boss. Mr Bindon was ako present. Appointments Cpmijaittee.— -The following business was transacted :— Hkwera : Respecting; Mra Horneman, it was resolved that she be informed that she must pay Mils Sohotield> travelling expenses, and iarther,: that during the time" that Miss Schofiejd. occupied Mrs Horneman'i position, the. salary should be paid to the former. .'• Report of the committee adopted.. ' . Finance.— The secretary reported that the general fund had a credit, after deducting liabilities, of £1630. The building fund was overdrawn £1659, and against it there were liabilities amounting to £1557. : Teaching Staff. — The committee authorised to deal with this matter reported as; follows :— Your committee beg to re-' port that after careful examination , 6f | the .matter of increasing the number, of teachers m the various" schools, they find the Board's revenue and expenditure so .nearly balanced as to render it impossible to generally increase, the teaching staff without reducing the scale i'-'bif payment to teachers — a course your committee cannot advise the Board to adopt. Yottr committee beg* howeyerj to/, recommend that a pupil-teacher be anpointed to. all schools where the average attendance reaches 50, and that' a cadet be i appointed where the attendance reaches 40. In all appointments the printed regulations of the Board to apply! That it be an instruction to the secretary to report to the Board upon any, school where the average attendance •falls to 18, with a view of haying the 'same reduced to an aided school. Your committee would direct the attention oi the Inspector to the excessively large number of children reported to b? m ohirge of pupil teachers m some of the Board's schools, with a view of] his having the classes reduced to something like reasonable proportions. —H. - Sanson, Chairman. ; . ■ ' ,; Mr Sanson said that the committee found that there was only £240 of reyenue m excess of expenditure,, and with thiji that they could make no further recommendation than that m the Jfeport. There were plenty of children m the small districts to keep up the r average if parents would only send them to school, instead df availing themselves of their services at home. He moved the adopturn of the report. ;■•- •■•■•••• .■<_ Rev.' Mr Ross seconded. , Ha was glad that what he had fought for m the past should now be attended to. ... Mr Sanson. referred to the last clause of the report of the committee dealing with the large number of children pldced under the charge of some of the pupil teachers. '■'. s jSoholarshjfp Regulations.— The Minister of Education wrote approving ~ ( gencp rally of the Board s revised scholarship regulations.- •He thought it might be wise to have .special scholarships for public schools, and that the clause providing thit any schdlai* who had attended •ny ; school m the district should ibe extended to include all, wherever and however educated; It was; considered by the 'Board that the extension was not necesstixy, as' ttie regulaitions provided that any scholar was ordered to be sent to th.c Minister, stating that the Board did not consider it necessary/ to alter the regulations.
