Whooping cough is quite as bad m the township of Ashursfc as it is m Palineraton. There is hardly a house in' the place that is exempt from the scourge and m a great many families the disease lias taken hold of every member including the babe only afew months; old. Adults too seem to have: been attacked with more than- usual severity. Theschool house has been closed now- for upwards of a fortnight, and will not be re-opened until the little ones are well rid of the cough. "We are informed that Messrs Snelson and Co. intend shortly to resume their Wednesday sales which were so popular last summer. If the idea of constituting Wednesday a general market day m Palmerston is carried out, the firm will doubtless offer fresh inducements to the. settlers to attend the auction mart. " The popular proprietor of the Manawatu Gorge Hotel notifies by ad ertisement m this issue preparations are being made for the safe conveyance of travellers and luggage to the Pohangina reefs. Mr Lowes has now a complete staff of good pac.i and saddle horses, and; will no doubt; receive the patronage of tourists and prospectors visiting the gold fields. . The Wellington Industrial Exhibition closes on Saturday week. It is understood that there will be some sort .of a ceremony either m the afternoon .or evening. A doubt arose at a recent Hawke's Bay Education Board meeting as to whether a young lady of nineteen was capable of teaching sewing. This (says the Telegraph) i» education m the nineteenth century. We have been requested to remind members of the United Manawatu Lodge 1721. E.G. and visiting brethren, that the instalatinn of W. M. and investiture of officers will take place this evening at 7 o'clock. We learn that MrD. H. Macarthiu M.H.8., will address his constituents about the end of January next. Tickets for the next entertainment to be given by the Dramatic and Musical Society can be procured on application at Standard Office, The performance will be m aid of the club's wardrobe, and as the progsame is an exceptionally attractive one, should .--draw a large house. The dramatic portion of the entertainment will consist of two popular pieces entitled " Sent to the Tower," and " Chiselling;" There will also'be a number of vocal and instrumental selections rendered. ; A Service of Son? will be, given ait the Awahuri Schoolhouse this evening m aid of the Presbyterian Building Fund. Several singers from Palmerston will take part m the programme. The new steam launch for the Defence Department will be launched at W.el' lington to-morrow. She will be named, the " Eellen|" after Mrs Ballance, .who will perform the christening ceremony. We understand that Or Hawkinn was informed after the last meeting of the Borough Council that he had inadvertently laid himself open to a penalty for having sat as a Borough Councillor yrith=»ut having made the usual forroai declaration as required by the Actj It. was suggested to him that possibly feotiie ' evil diflpoied person* might stir! the matter up, and thereby cauße, proceedings to be instituted. A summons was to-day taken, oiit for the amount of .penalty recoverable, and Or. Hawkins will, we understand, defend the cage on its merits. People wer© under the impression that the last had been, heard of prosecutions of this kind, but it would appear otherwise. Morally, of course, Cr Hawkins is absolutely blameless m tho matter, and it is probable that the result may prove that adopting even the most stringent interpretation of the Act, he has not laid himself open. Verily these are critical times for represi«ntatives of the public m local bodies, there being so many ready to watch for and draw attention to any little inadvertent errors of omission or commission. If the Governor did not meet with any public, reception at Woodville it'did not ro happen when His Excellency passed through Ashurst. As the carriagej conveying the Vice-regal party was proceeding towards . the Gorge ferry the Governor noticed a wee girl, prettily dressed, coining towards tho conveyance and immediately stopped the horses to ; . have a chat with the little one. A bright bouquet of spring flowers was proffered to His Excellency .by the little hands and accepted with many thanks by him. After, conversing for a few moments the Governor shook bands and the carriage drove away, he waiving his hands m adieu and th<' little one also wnivmg her handkerchief. The loyal subject m f his instauce was Miss Polly Lowes, youngest daughter of Mr Thomas Lowes, of the Gorge Hotel. Colonel Whitmore is to be promoted to the rank of Major General.
We (Cfa-onicle) ragr&t to learn that the valuable stud bull, which perished m the flames on Thursday morning, adds to the. serious loss which Mr J. W. Jackson has sustained by the fire, he having purchased the animal recently ■from Mr Donald Fraaer, of Rangitikei. It was known as the Dnke of Derrunut, and- was originally purchased from' Mr Gardiner, ot Bundoora, Victoria, for £300. \ . .- f : '■■ The traffic returns for last week on thti Wellington-Manawatu Railway show that £296 10s 5d was received, -and^ 4181 passenger* were carried oh the line between Wellington and Plimmerton. The v market trains " on Wednesday were again well patronised both ithe North and South contributing their quota, of the increased number of passengers. The practice of running these market day trains will prove of immense value to farmers, and • will no donbt be largely availed of as soon us they more generally know about it. — Herald. t-
