BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT.
An ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor, Crs Hawkins, Grace, J. and T. King, Wood and Rush. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. .,.,...,.-... From the Crown Lands Department forwarding copy of Special Powers and Contract Act. This letter^ w^as.m^rJßforence to the land at Bunny thorpe and Terrace End granted last year under said Act. It was resolved that the land he gazetted m order that the Council might ho m a position to sell, when deemed' advisable, as suggested m the letter from the Department. From the Treasury Department intimating a payment of ten shillings lor breach of the Borough Bye-laws. Crs Larcomb, Huteheson, and A. S. Bentley wrote tendering their resignation as Crs; on the motion of Or T, 'King seconded by Cr Hawkins the resignations were accepted with regret. Cr J. King pointed out that Cr West waß now the only member on the Public Works Committee, and himself on the Finance oommittee. . , ' i \ ': ) ; A letter was read from Messrs Chriitensen and Larsen requesting the Coun. cil to assist them m thematter of providing an entrance to their- properties at Terrace End, as since the'.»erection of the school-house they bad ne means of getting m or out. It was resolved to refer the matter t» the Public Works Committee, cost m each case of work required not to exceed £10. ? On the motion of Cr Hawkins it was resolved to add Crs Ruth and^ Qrace ta the Public Works Committee, m pace of Crs |Lareomb and Huteheson resigned. Cr J. King moved that the following work be placed on the list of works to be carried out by the Council— TKat a bridge be constructed over the Kawaii creek, across Kairanga-street, adjoining Mr Nathan's property, to be erected after the bush lately fallen is burnt-rrCarried. Mr Sheerin wrote offering to place a bridge over dram as applied for at last meeting of the Council, price; to be £10. ; It wa3 considered that the price being excessive the Foreman of Work should inspect the work and report to the Council an estimate of the outlay required. A motion to this effect was proposed and carried. ; Cr Hawkins proposed that a portion of the pound should be set "apart for a market place, and a scale of charges prepared and submitted to the Council for approval. The mover pointed out that the concessions made by , the Railway Department m. the m&tter of cheap 4 feres on market days might be secured, and that the constituting of a regular place for the sale of produce &c., would conduce considerably to the interests of thi settlers; and also help to extend thevcottrV mercial transactions of the farmers and producers iri and about 'the district. .? r After some discussion a resolution was passed to the effect that a market place as. suggested 1 by. Cr Hawkins .rshpuldy be. ,, made and that Wednesday be declared a'"-market-day m the Borough- of~Palmer»- , ston North. Cr West drew the attention of the Council to the matter of the lighting- ofr ' the Borough ; the present arrangements were, he considered, most unsatifactory. The speaker stated that arrangements had been made m conection with this matter, whom the proposed loan scheme had been under negotiation, but that since nothing had resulted from the :■'- loin •'■; scheme, the matter had fallen through. The Mayor remarked that it might bo better for Cr Weat to hold over his motion | for the present, as the loan question would be considered further on ' m the meeting. Cr West proposed that the Town Clerk should be authorized- to transfer the sum of one guinea received trom the Standard Insurance Company 'as a donation to the Fire Brigade. The Mayor stated to the meeting that a communication had been received from i the Union Bank m reference -to the loan project, and he deemed it advisable that | this time .at least matters m connection , [ with the scheme should not be published m J the newspapers until negotiations refer- " t ring thereto had been concluded. The * reporters present Were therefore requested not to make use of information gained from the discussion about td take place. notice op Motion. , Alter discussion of the loan question, Gr J. King gave noticeiof motion to tha effect that the meetings of the Council should only be held once a month m future. The meeting then adjourned.
