The Gorge Telephone.

(Woodville Examiner.) About eighteen month* ago a motion was made to havo telephonic communication established through the Gorge. As usual a promise was given and forforgotten. A few months ago Col. Gorton moved m tho matter when m Wellington, and with the co-operation of Messrs Smith and Macarthur, M.H.R.'s, a promise was given by Sir Julius Yogel that the matter should be attended to. Dr Lemon visited the district with a view to giving effect to the proposal. Ou visiting the Lower Ferry, Mr Lowes, the lessee, stateu m effect that the telephone should be erected m the hotel, or if it were erected m the ferry-housa . a charge should he made for attending to it. What is the result ? Dr Lemon goes back and says if these obstacles are to be thrown m the way the telephone shall not be erected at all. Mr Lowes is usually very courteous, and we think it need only be represented to him that it is the desire of the general public that this communication should be established to forego his objection, which would have the effect of knocking he thing on the head. To say the least, the request to be paid for attending to the telephone is unreasonable, for to whom will it be a greater convenience than to the ferry-man m knowing what traffic may be passing through tha Gorge ? It" tin's much desired communication is not carried out we regret to say that the settlets m Manawatu and Woodville will have Mr Lowes to thank for it, but wo believe he will see the necessity of foregoing his demand.
