POLICE COURT.

A tramp named Rae was brought before Messrs Snelson and Waldegrave, Esqs., J's.P. to-day, charged with 1 the larceny of £1 odd from a contractor at Ashurst. Evidence was taken showing that the accused was employed yesterday to fall bush for the complainant, and that the latter left his tent to fetch water from the stream,leaving a pair of trousers behind, him containing the money; on his return he saw the man shaking the pants. He, however, said nothing then until his mate arrived, when tie accused Rae of the offence. Tho prisoner denied the whole affair, and m Court produced a diary of his wanderings, showing that there were very few parts of the Colony he had not at some time or another visited, and also showing that lie had managed 1 to receive sufficient aid m his wanderings to pay traveling expenses, &c. The various boarding-houses he had patronised and the small donations of two or three shillings received from time to time being religiously entered with the, name and amount m full. No work of any description is recorded, and the gay and festive young man still pursues the even tenor of his way, as the prestnt charge was dismissed, no money being found on him when searched. .
