Captain Taylor commanded the artillery. The firing began from the 64---pounder battery, at Middle Bluff, at a .floating target a thousand yards offThe shooting was done principally with 321 b shell, and afterwards with 641 b shell plugged, without a bursting charge. The sixteenth shot, which was fired Sergeant' Major Wardell, demolished the target. Major Bodd am had prpyiously struck, the flag. Two shots were fired from each of the 7-ton guns at a range of4000yds. One vqry good shot was made,, but the others were not satisfactory, owing, it is said, to the target being beyond the sighting of the guns. The grin fburi-r daiions, about which some apprf'hens'ion had bean felt, were not at all disturbed by the firing. .
